A SYMBIOSIS OF CONCERT STAGE, EXHIBIT SPACE AND LECTURE HALL WITH AUDIENCE EXPERIENCE AS ITS HEARTBEAT.
CANVAS HAS FEATURED MORE THAN 60 MUSICIANS, ARTISTS, HISTORIANS AND CRAFTSPEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE GLOBE.
Canvas alumni can be found touring internationally, singing with the Metropolitan Opera, recording albums, performing on the Grammys, singing on Broadway, teaching in conservatories, and playing with national symphonies.
Lynn Hutchinson (Artistic Director, Composer, Arranger, Pianist, Lecturer) has a long-standing commitment to entertaining and enlightening audiences.
Lynn has been a working solo and ensemble pianist, keyboardist, arranger, orchestrator, teacher, and lecturer for 25 years. Whether playing keyboards with Grammy Award-winning rock band Incubus, writing a micro-opera commissioned by the Dutch National Opera, performing Brahms as a solo pianist at New York's Fashion Week, or writing orchestral arrangements, Lynn is a vibrant collaborator who is sought after for her ability to bring heart, mind and craft into every project.
David Sheldon (Media Director, Managing Director) creates Canvas's media content and oversees its business planning. He lends his passion and expertise in visual and audio execution to every Canvas program, helping to create ideal audience experiences. Known among Canvas alumni as “The Everything Man,” David’s work for Canvas includes original artwork, installations, video and audio editing and lighting design.
When not working on the next Canvas project, he can be found surfing, watching football, taking photographs, or donning suit and tie as the business development director for an international architecture firm based in Long Beach, CA.
CANVAS WAS FOUNDED BY LYNN HUTCHINSON AND DAVID SHELDON IN DECEMBER 2006 AS A COMMUNITY OFFERING TO THEIR INTERNATIONAL NEIGHBORS IN AMSTERDAM.
Originally advertised as "een leuke avondje met wijn, muziek en buren" ("a fine evening with wine, music and neighbors”), Canvas became a passionate meeting place for musicians, artists, historians, friends and neighbors to enjoy Ms. Hutchinson’s creative collaborative programming.
In 2010, David and Lynn returned to the United States. Canvas is now located in their home in Marina del Rey, CA.
IN 2012, CANVAS RECEIVED A GIFT OF A STEINWAY "MODEL A" GRAND PIANO FROM A PATRON.
Lovingly referred to as “Lady A,” the instrument is the heartbeat of every performance. Each season, CANVAS offers a concert that distinctly features the instrument and from which the proceeds benefit an emerging professional pianist. This distribution is called The Da Capo Scholarship.
CANVAS PROMOTES ARTISTS, EDUCATES AUDIENCES, GIVES CHILDREN A CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE HIGH QUALITY MUSICIANSHIP, AND REGULARLY GIVES A PORTION OF ITS PROCEEDS TO CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS.
Canvas has proudly supported Heal the Bay, The Bangladesh Project (Ecological Management Foundation), World Vision, Saint Joseph’s Center, Musicians Without Borders, and The Colburn School.
